Hardware Deep Dive
The Rigetti Ankaa-3 is the company's current flagship superconducting quantum processor, launched in December 2024. It represents a comprehensive redesign across Rigetti's entire hardware stack — from the cryogenic enclosure to the Josephson junction manufacturing process. The result is a system that halved two-qubit gate error rates compared to its predecessor, reaching a landmark 99.5% median fSim gate fidelity and 99.0% median iSWAP fidelity. Ankaa-3 is manufactured at Fab-1, Rigetti's dedicated in-house quantum foundry in Berkeley, California.

Common Provider Questions
What is ABAA and why does it matter?
Alternating-Bias Assisted Annealing (ABAA) is Rigetti's proprietary technique for fabricating the Josephson junctions at the heart of each superconducting qubit. Traditional junction fabrication introduces frequency spread across qubits, making it harder to tune the chip into a low-noise operating point. ABAA allows Rigetti to precisely target each qubit's frequency during manufacturing, reducing qubit-qubit crosstalk and enabling more uniform gate performance across all 84 qubits, which is a direct contributor to the 99.5% fidelity milestone.
What is the difference between iSWAP and fSim gates?
Both are two-qubit entangling gates native to superconducting hardware. The iSWAP is a universal gate suitable for a wide range of quantum algorithms and achieves 99.0% median fidelity on Ankaa-3. The fSim gate is a more specialized, faster variant (56 ns vs 72 ns) that reaches 99.5% fidelity and is particularly useful for specific workloads such as quantum simulation and random circuit sampling. Users can choose which gate type to compile against depending on their algorithm's requirements.
How does a square lattice topology affect my circuit?
Unlike trapped-ion systems (which have all-to-all connectivity), Ankaa-3's square lattice means each qubit can only directly interact with its immediate neighbors. Circuits that require interactions between non-adjacent qubits need SWAP gates inserted by the compiler to "route" operations, which adds overhead and reduces effective circuit depth. The tunable couplers on Ankaa-3 help mitigate this by allowing precise control of coupling strength, reducing leakage error during two-qubit operations on connected pairs.
Why does the Rigetti Ankaa-3 go offline?
Superconducting QPUs require regular recalibration to maintain gate fidelity. Qubit frequencies drift over time due to environmental factors, and the tunable couplers must be re-optimized chip-wide on a scheduled basis. Offline windows on our dashboard almost always correspond to these calibration cycles rather than hardware failures. Rigetti also performs periodic cryogenic maintenance to keep the dilution refrigerator operating near absolute zero.
